Contemporary art museum CAAC
Contemporary art museum CAAC Address: Avenida Américo Vespucio, 2
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Seville (CAAC) is located just outside the city centre, on the Cartuja Island. In the 16th century it was a monastery, but around 1841 the building converted in a pottery and ceramics factory. Nowadays it houses a very wide collection of contemporary art, including videos and music as well. There is so much to see actually, that if time is no issue, you maybe better go two days.
With less than € 2.00 entrance, it is a bargain Art Exhibition. Some work you will like, some you might not, but neither an issue … the building is such an interesting thing on its own to visit, even it was only for its spectacular gallery. As said, the exhibition hosts all types of contemporary art featuring videos, photographs, sculptures and installations. You also have plenty of photo opportunities for yourself in this huge, well- preserved, monastic complex. In the basement there’s an enjoyable bar offering daily menus for around € 8.00 which are very tasty.
Within the CAAC, the cafe Cartuja is recommended both just for a drink or a good lunch that is daily available for under 10 euros. This place is run by an enthusiastic young, alternative team which is welcome to absorb in the museum world which mostly is run by dusty city councils.
They organize several festivals a year as well as concerts, theatre, performances such as the returning, Electronic Lunch or The Picnic Interestelar or the recently created Soulville festival with black music as the main guideline.
For instance in February 2018 they present together with long time music label from Seville ,Green Ufos, a winter festival called El Dia de la Marmota durin daytime until 23h with a huge list of upcomming bands and dj’s.We remember the people from Green Ufos when we had Francoize Breutz and Dominique A recording in our studio Enfrente Arte back in the late ninetees…our studio turned into a language school these days, called Entre Lenguas Ronda.
So to know what is on the local scene , before your trip it is good to check the Green Ufo facebook page as well as the events of the other music label form Seville called Happy Place Records. Happy Place releases records from Sevillan artist Pajaro , Pelo Mono, La Big Rabia and more. They set up gigs all over town and beyond in places such as Sala X or Vinilo Rock Bar Most of their artists have already participated at the DV festival at our friends bodega Descalzos Viejos and therefor has become a vivid connection of wine and alternative music between Seville and Ronda.
This festival takes place in the magnificent gardens of the 16th century monastry of the Descalzos Viejos monks and has since 2017 a fantastic European brother with a completely new, international dance festival set up by Moods…we are glad that the alternative music scene is back alive with new initiatives like these ones.
