El Viernes 26 de Febrero a partir de las 23:30h, tendremos la posibilidad de ver en directo a CARLOS SEGARRA (Componente de Los Rebeldes) & ROCK'n'ROLL CLUB y BLUES FEVER.

Carlos Segarra Sanchez:

Nació en Barcelona en Diciembre de 1962. En 1979 fundó la banda Los Rebeldes y en 1980, junto a Moisés Soroya y Aurelio Morata, creó la mítica formación con la que se dió a conocer en el país. Su aparición en el programa de televisión La edad de oro causó sensación en plena movida madrileña.
Está considerado como uno de los más emblemáticos y pioneros del movimiento rockabilly español.

Formó su primer grupo a finales de los setenta, Teddy Loquillo y sus amigos junto a Loquillo, pero tuvieron escaso éxito, por lo que decidieron montar sus propias bandas por separado. Poco después, Kaki, el actual líder de los teddy-boys barceloneses, lo ayudó a actuar en locales como L'Angelot o Trabanqueta, donde interpretó versiones de los clásicos del rock n roll. El despliegue rockabilly de finales de los setenta en Barcelona, contribuyó a su aprendizaje.

El Viernes 19 de Marzo a partir de las 23:30 horas, en la Sala Caireles de Arriate podremos disfrutar de un concierto el cual actuaran “Los Vecinos del Callejón“

Los Vecinos del Callejón se forman en su mayoría por estudiantes procedentes de todos los puntos de Andalucía. El grupo empezó su andadura, como su nombre indica, en un callejón de la ciudad nazarí, en un piso de estudiantes, y, poco a poco, gracias al boca a boca, logró reunir en un espacio de dos meses a sus ocho integrantes, todos locos amantes de la música.

Desde el comienzo deciden trabajar duro para sacar adelante un proyecto musical en el que ponen mucho empeño, muchas horas y una gran ilusión, con la intención de llevar su música a todas las personas dispuestas a oírles.

LILA DOWNS IN TEATRO CERVANTES MALAGA

On the 10th of March at 21.00 hours, the singer Lila Downs will act in the Theatre Cervantes in Malaga. Lila Downs returned with Ojo de culebra, one of her records that is most open to fusion, including genres ranging from cumbia, ranchera, reggae and pop to rock, blues, gypsy music, through versions of Southern US classics such as Black magic woman, Peter Green’s classic made popular by Santana in the 70s, or Lucinda Williams’ I envy the wind.

In Ojo de culebra there is also a combination of popular and electric instruments wrapping festive, dense, light, contemplative and danceable songs with lyrics about women who take risks, nature, food, the paradoxes of life or current affairs such as immigration, political justice or the transformation of society.

With Ojo de culebra, which has coincided with the process of overcoming a very deep life crisis which even led her to lose her voice, and for which the help of a famous Oaxaca curandera (healer) was decisive (that is why the record is a tribute to the shamans and healers of Mexico), she once again shows that for her music is a path in search of internal peace, to feel less pain, return pride to the downtrodden indigenous cultures and help change consciences.
Lila Downs (born 1968 in Tlaxiaco is a Mxican / US Americn singer. She performs her own compositions as well as tapping into native Mesoamercan music of the Mixtec Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl cultures.

Downs is the daughter of Mixtec cabaret singer Anita Sánchez and Allen Downs, a Scottis /English- American teacher of art and cinematographer. She grew up partly in the Oaxaca.

She later returned to Mexico where she learned to weave. Later, she began singing in the club scenes of Oaxaca and Philadelphia along with Paul Cohen, an American-born saxophonist. They began collaborating together on songs that would slowly evolve into Downs's subsequent recordings. Cohen went on to become both Downs' husband and her artistic director.

In recent years, Downs and her band have toured widely in Mexico, South America, the US and Europr. She was also heard in the soundtrack to the movie Frida in a song, Burn it Blue, that was nominated for the “Academy Award for the Best Song” and that she performed at the 75th Academy Awards. Other songs that she performed on the soundtrack are "Benediction and Dream," "Estrella Oscura," and "La Llorona." Other movies with a Lila Downs song are “Tortilla Soup”, “ Real Women have a Curves” and “Fados” by Carlos Saura. She was also invited to the “ Twelve Girls Band´s's concert in Shanghai, Downs is currently based in Coyoacán (Mexico)

KRONOS QUARTET IN TEATRO CERVANTES

On the 19th of May 2009 in Theatre Cervantes in Malaga, will act the quartet of music “Kronos Quartet”. Founded in 1973 by US violinist David Harrington, Kronos Quartet is a string ensemble specialised in contemporary music performances. Their work is eclectic and includes soundtracks for films, folk music, jazz, tango, early music, through which they move freely, performing compositions by Astor Piazzolla, Thelonius Monk, Jimi Hendrix and the main musicians of the so-called minimalist tradition, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Kevin Volans. It is important to point out that the quartet does not compose, but rather performs music created by other musicians.

However, Kronos Quartet is much more than a quartet; it is actually an institution that has managed to encourage composers of this century to renovate a genre born two hundred years ago, thanks to Haydn. In fact, the Kronos Quartet/Kronos Performing Arts Association, as the group is known, is a non-profit organisation, with headquarters in San Francisco, whose artistic mission is to promote contemporary music and extend the repertoire for string quartets.

ERIC FISCHL IN CAC MALAGA

From the 29th of January till 4th of April 2010, Cac Malaga is presenting the first ever solo exhibition in a Spanish museum by Eric Fischl who, along with Alex Katz, is one of the most eminent American figurative painters of the second half of the 20th century. On show there will be large-format paintings and watercolours forming part of this New York artist’s first art of bullfighting, created after he attended Ronda’s Goyesque bullfight in 2007.

“Corrida in Ronda”, the title of the exhibition curated by Fernando Francés, summarises the rich language of the artist’s painting. There are two things about his works that are particularly outstanding and unique in contemporary painting: the use of backlighting to depict the toreadors’ passes and the way he imbues them with an emotive charge.

Corrida in Ronda is surprising because of the expressive power the New York artist has given to the art of bullfighting; on these huge canvases there is nothing but the impressiveness of the bullfight, strong bulls and admirable toreadors. Here we are not looking at an artist of enamelled, uniform surfaces, but rather at a devotee of chiaroscuro. Consequently, light is one of the most significant aspects of his style, and in his works he uses strong contrasts of light that create a sensation of depth. There are some figures that demand a little effort to extract them from the semi-darkness, while others are almost painful to look at because of their overexposure to the sun, a technique that he uses to produce the highest degree of expressiveness in his characters.

Eric Fischl Biography:

Born in New York City in 1948, Eric Fischl grew up in the suburbs of Long Island , his parents having moved there shortly before his second year."Safer place to raise a family", they used to say. Against a backdrop of alcoholism and a country club culture obsessed with image over content, Fischl became focussed on the rift between what was experienced and what could not be said. Until the late 70's, suburbia was not considered a legitimate genre for art. With his first New York show at the Edward Thorp Gallery, epithets like "psycho-sexual suburban dramas" became velcroed to his disturbing images of dyfunctional family life.

Fischl began his art education in Phoenix, Arizona where his parents had moved in 1967. First at Phoenix Junior College, then a year at Arizona State University, and finally getting his BFA in 1972 at the recently opened California Institute of the Arts in Valencia,California.

After graduation he moved to Chicago where he worked as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was in Chicago that Fischl was exposed to the non-mainstream art of the Hairy Who. "The underbelly, carnie world of Ed Paschke and the hilarious sexual vulgarity of Jim Nutt were revelatory experiences for me.", Fischl has said.

In 1974, he got a job teaching painting at the highly touted Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. It is there that he met his future wife, the painter, April Gornik. In 1978 they moved to New York City where they continue to live and work.

JAZZ EN EL CONVENTO DE SANTO DOMINGO RONDA

El Viernes dia 6 de Noviembre 2009, en el Convento de Santo Domingo, podremos disfrutar de Mala JAzz Quintet.

Es un grupo de jazz malagueño que surge en 2003 por iniciativa de la pianista Alla Yanovsky, que en estas fechas eligió Málaga como su lugar de residencia.

Su primer concierto fue el 21 de septiembre, “Día Internacional de la Paz”, en el teatro Canovas, y tuvo tal repercusión que el nombre del grupo quedó en el oído de los malagueños. A raíz de este acontecimiento han actuado en todas las salas de concierto de Málaga y muchas de la costa del sol, ha participado en tres Festivales Internacionales de Jazz de Málaga, Festival Internacional de New Jazz de Granada.

Entre otros lugares de la costa fueron bien recibidos en el club de jazz de Ronda, Siete de Copas, Casa de Cultura de Nerja, de Benalmadena, etc. La capacidad del grupo para una experimentación constante y su interacción con el público han cosechado buenas críticas en estos años. Diversos proyectos como “Música del Cine” para tres festivales del cine español de Málaga, “Málaga jazz groove”, Mardi jazz”, “Homenaje a Joe Venuti”, etc. estaban cada uno dedicados a un reto musical particular.

El presente proyecto “Latín in Blue” contiene temas emblemáticos del jazz latino, con sus característicos ritmos afro-cubanos, introducidos en el repertorio de jazz en su momento por grandes figuras como Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington o Antonio Carlos Jobim. La idea es palpar el lado pasional y rítmico de esta música, pero también su lado más sensible e intimo.

JENNIFER STINKAMP EN EL CAC MALAGA

Desde el 16 de Septiembre al 22 de Noviembre se podrá disfrutar en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de MAlaga (CAC) la instalación de Jennifer Steinkamp.

Es una artista que realiza instalaciones utilizando el vídeo y otros medios audiovisuales para explorar las ideas de naturaleza, espacio arquitectónico, movimiento y percepción.
La instalación está compuesta por dos obras, Dervish 8, 2004, que forma parte de la Colección de Carmen Riera, y Dance Hall Girl 10, 2005.

La primera, Dervish 8, 2004, consiste en una proyección de alta definición de un árbol de ondulantes ramas. Está inspirado por un ritual practicado por sacerdotes, o Dervishes, de la secta Mevlavi del Islam. En estado de trance, los derviches dan vueltas simbolizando la liberación del alma de las ataduras terrenales para entrar en comunicación con lo divino. En Dervish 8, el movimiento de las ramas contiene elementos tanto de control como de anarquía.

Por su parte, Dance Hall Girl 10, 2005, consiste en una pequeña video proyección de alta definición de flores bailando. El título hace referencia a una frase que Steinkamp oyó mientras veía una película del oeste, Dance hall girl (chica de salón) haciendo referencia a la mujer que trabajaba en el salon o cantina.

Le pareció una etiqueta muy peculiar para una mujer. La chica de salón era considerada una perdida, vestida en colores chillones y con escandalosos escotes.

CHEMA COBO EN EL CAC MALAGA

Desde el 9 de Octubre 2009 al 24 de Enero 2010, el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC) presenta la obra de un artista español con el objetivo fundamental de reposicionarlo en el panorama artístico nacional e internacional.

En esta ocasión, acoge la primera exposición individual del siglo XXI de Chema Cobo, una exposición en apariencia serena pero llena de ilusionismo, tensiones, mensajes ocultos, guiños perversos, juegos malabares e ironía.

OUT OF FRAME es una selección de 33 obras realizadas en los últimos diez años. En ellas encontramos a un Chema Cobo preocupado en liberar la obra de todo aquello que distrae, es el espectador el que debe ser hábil y perspicaz para descubrir que las cosas no son lo que parecen. De ahí que estemos ante una secuencia de obras, donde el orden y el sentido los determinarán el propio visitante.

Biografia:

Chema Cobo nació en Tarifa (Cádiz) en 1952. Entre 1970 y 1974 cursó estudios de Lingüística en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Entre 1981 y 1982 disfrutó de una beca como artista residente en P. S. 1, en Nueva York. Entre 1993 y 1994 fue profesor invitado en el Art Institute de Chicago. Ese último año recibió el Premio Andalucía de Artes Plásticas. En la actualidad vive y trabaja en un pueblo de Málaga, Alhaurín el Grande.

Desde 1975, año en que realizó su primera exposición individual su obra ha podido verse en los más diversos espacios. En 1998, el Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo produjo una muestra antológica bajo el título El laberinto de la brújula, que presentó al año siguiente en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. En 1999, el Museo Municipal de Málaga mostró su última serie: 1789-1799, Season of Shooting Stars.En estos momentos, prepara su próxima exposición en la Galería Antonio Machón de Madrid. En marzo de 2001, en las Salas de la Diputación y en el Museo Municipal de Cádiz podrán verse sendas muestras con la obra inédita sobre papel y una retrospectiva global de obras sobre el mismo soporte.

Grabando en Almería coinciden con los hermanos Vallejo, Nacho e Iván (flauta y contrabajo), músicos de Madrid que se unen al grupo. Poco más tarde en uno de sus conciertos Carlos Rey, de la Isla (Cádiz), percusionista y guitarrista se uniría a la formación.

El músico neoyorquino vuelve a mostrar su talento para el blues después de más de 25 años de trayectoria. A sus espaldas, ocho discos editados. Lo último, una colaboración para el nuevo trabajo de Raimundo Amador. No en vano, Richard Ray Farrell ha desarrollado la mayor parte de su carrera en Europa, donde comenzó a tocar en 1975 en el metro de París. En 1980, emigró a Alemania. Allí emprendió un nuevo camino como miembro de una banda de Stuttgart. Desde entonces, su estilo ha ido evolucionando, pero siempre fiel a una personal forma de entender el blues. Poco a poco se fue haciendo un nombre propio, con influencias que van desde Muddy Waters a Robert Johnson, pasando por el mítico BB King.

Cinco músicos de reconocida trayectoria se embarcan en una aventura a través del túnel del tiempo y recuperan a la vez que actualizan los grandes éxitos que han hecho soñar a varias generaciones. Un homenaje sonoro a grupos como Los Mismos, Los Bravos, Formula V, Los Brincos, el Dúo Dinámico... y por supuesto al maestro Antón García Abril, uno de los músicos clásicos de la cinematografía española, compositor casi exclusivo en la década de los 60-70 del fenómeno del 'landismo'.
En definitiva, asistir a un concierto de Los Dabadaba es un divertido ejercicio de nostalgia y memoria, apto para todos los públicos.

Málaga se prepara este año para una temporada otoño-invierno con ritmo. La agenda de la capital se amplía con un nuevo programa: Málaga Auditorium Club, un producto turístico que pretende reforzar el posicionamiento de la capital como receptora de turistas de eventos a través de la puesta en marcha de conciertos incluidos en paquetes combinados con alojamiento y oferta gastronómica.

Ya hay fecha: noviembre y diciembre. Y, por supuesto, protagonistas: David Bisbal, Joaquín Sabina, Antonio Orozco y Pereza son los cabezas de cartel de esta iniciativa, fruto de la colaboración entre el Área de Juventud, Turismo, Málaga Deportes y Eventos y el Grupo Mundo. A juicio del concejal de Turismo del Ayuntamiento de Málaga, Elías Bendodo, se trata del «complemento perfecto a la oferta museística y monumental de la capital».

Para todos los públicos

Los encargados de abrir el fuego son Pereza, el 14 de noviembre. Le seguirán Antonio Orozco (27 de noviembre) y David Bisbal (12 de diciembre), que acaba de estrenar disco. En principio, en el Auditorio Municipal. Cerrará el ciclo Joaquín Sabina el 22de diciembre en el Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena.

Conciertos «de alto nivel», según el edil, que buscan atraer tanto a la población local como a la nacional e internacional. No en vano, como destaca el gerente de Espectáculos Mundo, Juan Antonio Rodríguez, los acontecimientos culturales y deportivos son un reclamo para todo tipo de público, sea cual sea su procedencia. O más bien una 'excusa' para hacer una escapada, «un aliciente» para turistas que, una vez en Málaga, aprovechan la visita para disfrutar de la ciudad.

Las opciones son diversas. Cada una se adapta a las necesidades y gustos de los clientes. Una, la más simple, es la entrada del concierto a secas, mientras que otra posibilidad es combinar la actuación con el alojamiento, la gastronomía y otros espectáculos.

Selección Española de baloncesto en Sevilla

Los aficionados al baloncesto están de suerte. La selección española, los chicos más grandes de todos los tiempos, ofrecerá el lunes 17 de agosto, en Sevilla, en el Polideportivo San Pablo una jornada de puertas abiertas.

Con esta iniciativa se iniciará la campaña Sevilla siempre llena con España. Las puertas del Polideportivo de San Pablo se abrirán el lunes a partir de las 19:00 horas, para que todos los aficionado/as puedan ver a los campeones del mundo. A partir de este mismo día también se pueden comprar las entradas en el mismo pabellón, que ya están a la venta a través de Internet.

El Torneo Marca Ciudad de Sevilla, se disputará los días 19, 20 y 21 de este mes en la capital hispalense, y además de la española estarán las selecciones de Gran Bretaña, Eslovenia y Lituania. En la primera jornada jugarán Lituania-Eslovenia (18.15) y España-Gran Bretaña (20.30). Eutopía 2009, one of most important music festivals in Spain just completed its programmation. At this edition 2009 Riff Producciones has been elected to organize the concerts that will take place on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th of September at the sports complex Vistalegre in Córdoba. The festival will bring the best Spanish bands from this moment to Córdoba to play live at this 4th edition of Eutopía Festival.

On Friday 25th the festival will bring the best Spanish indie with Vetusta Morla, Love of Lesbian, We are Standard and The Right Ons , a mix of the best bands of the actual independent scene.

With Vetusta Morla the festival will take off with a young band from Madrid who has been winning several important awards over the last year. Followed by The Right Ons and the amazing live band Love of Lesbian, the first day of the festival will end with the big revelation of the last FIB-Festival (Festival Internacional de Benicàssim) We Are Standard.

On Saturday 26th the vibe of the festival will change a little bit with a more commercial program, but with the same level of quality of interesting contemporary music.

The first to perform is Macaco, the kings of the radio formulas with their “Moving”, then ElBicho, party guaranteed or the Basque band Zodiacs, from the summer hit “Con poco me lo Monto”, followed by the British band The Freeks with members of Supersuckers, Zen Guerrilla or Fumanchu.

Matthew Coman

Back in 2003, classical musicians Matthew Coman and Jane Fenton came to the province of Cadiz to find a peaceful retreat from their busy career. They settled on a house in the white village of Alcala de los Gazules, hilltop gateway to the Alcornocales Natural Park. Little did they imagine the far-reaching consequences of their decision.

Despite their busy international schedule, performing with major symphony orchestras in the UK and touring internationally with The Soloists of London chamber orchestra, the two musicians felt they wanted to ‘give something back’ to their adopted village. They suggested to the Mayor that their chamber group come to Alcalá to perform for the villagers.

Matthew says that 99% of the inhabitants had never before heard live classical music. Their reaction however, was both affirming and intensely moving. The two musicians were so surprised by the feedback and people told them how moved they were by the music. It just shows that you can never underestimate your audience.

Alcala de los Gazules

Now a firm fixture on the festival calendar of the province, Alcalá celebrates its 5th FESTIVAL INTERNCIONAL DE MÚSICA DE AL-KALAT this august. Little by little, the event has grown in stature with international soloists making guest appearances, including oboist Alun Darbyshire; pianist Claudio Martínez Mehner; and Spanish soprano Pilar Jurado, who has since become internationally acclaimed and is starring in the climax of the festival this year.

Matthew’s commitment and dedication to championing classical music in the region also extends to working with young people. Workshops during the festival introduce children to the instruments, talk about the lives of classical composers and explain why they musicians themselves play music.

The festival programme has also featured young musicians from the Academy of the Barenboim-Said Foundation of Seville, plus the Avalonia Quartet drawn from the Youth Orchestra of Andalucia. Meanwhile, the growing success of the 120-strong Youth Orchestra of Andalucia, under the tutelage of the genius ex-violinist of the world famous Brodski Quartet, Michael Thomas, is set to challenge the supremacy of both the British and Venezuelan Youth Orchestras.

This year the soloists have been busy auditioning and working with students from the music schools of Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz and La Linea to form a brand new Cadiz Youth Orchestra. This new young string orchestra has made their first public performance in Cadiz at the patio of the Diputacion on last August 11th, followed by a performance at the Festival the next day.

One can only guess at the complexity involved in bringing about these musical miracles, not to mention the dedicated support of the Ayuntamiento (City Hall), Diputación de Cádiz, Junta de Andalucia, as well as private companies such as Polanco and Unicaja.

These days Matthew tried to manage to balance his career with the symphony orchestras in the UK, the international touring schedule of the Soloists of London and his increased workload in Spain, but he recently decided to stop playing with the Symphony Orchestras, because there was no more time to do so.

“For most musicians , playing Chamber music is the gold! The players have more control and creative input; the music is more intimate; and there is much more connection with the audience. We particularly love to play in the atmospheric Spanish churches, courtyards and patios, which are so well suited to smaller audiences. And with the new Youth Orchestra, my thoughts are even running to initiating Sunday morning ‘coffee concerts’ in Cadiz, which have been so immensely popular in the UK” Matthew says.

Let’s hope that it won’t be long before the patios and plazas of Cadiz ring out not only with the infectious sounds of Sevillana and Flamenco music, but also with the melodious strains of classical composers.

Casapiedragua, rather than a work-of-art catalogue, is a work concept under which the head artist manifests both his creative capacity and a great variety of styles that can be conceived by his imagination

Casapiedragua is also more than a single name; it is a technique to create methacrylate sculptures carved with traditional tools, a pioneering style whose development dates back to the early 90’s.

The Sculptures are made of marmolina, this material is much cheaper and a lot easier to work with than authentic marble. It is composed of pressed marble dust and acquires the effects of aging with real convincing result.

In the wide collection of Francisco Carmona you will find original works in different formats and styles that are suitable for the most exclusive tastes, and a great variety of limited collections consisting of small-format works of art with exclusive designs for this project.

JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA & BODEGA

Sherry isn’t usually a tipple associated with cricket, as the ‘barmy army’ would surely agree. And yet it is because of this little glass of sunshine that cricket was played, for a tie, in a corner of Southwest Andalucía – a game not just of English gentleman but Spanish ones too.

In fact from Shakespeare to the modern day Poets Laureate – who still receive “a butt of sack per annum” or the equivalent of around 110 gallons of stuff – sherry has forged a special bond between the British Isles and its home town, Jerez de la Frontera. It is a bond which still exists today and which gives Jerez its own unique character amongst Spanish cities.

The very word, ‘sherry’, is an anglicized for of the original Moorish name for Jerez itself, the place which lies at the heart of the sherry producing area in Cádiz province. The elegant streets are filled with the heady aroma of the area’s most famous export, and the roll call of sherry bodegas – Sandeman, Garvey, Terry, Osborne, Williams & Humbert to name but a few – bears witness to that special connection.

English merchants were already trading in this part of Spain back in the 15th Century, and England’s Spanish Queen, Catherine of Aragon, wrote to her father to tell him how much her husband Henry VIII was enjoying the sherry he had sent. When Drake came to Cádiz to “singe the beard of the King of Spain” and scupper his plans to invade England, he also managed to capture nearly 3,000 barrels of the fortified wine to take back with him. It made him a rich man and marked the start of the English love affair with sherry.

For sherry connoisseur José Luis Jiménez Garcia, it’s a source of pride and wonder that his beloved ‘vino de Jerez’ has forged this centuries-old link between his home town and the British Isles. “Sherry is the symbol of our union”, he says. “England and Spain have been enemies in the past. But in truth we’re united by sherry. Even the vocabulary – ‘dry’ and ‘cream’ – is shared.”

Born in the shadow of a bodega, José Luis has made it his life’s work to explore and promote sherry’s influence on culture and the arts. “Isn’t it incredible to think that we are sitting here today sipping the same sherry that Shakespeare loved to drink in the Mermaid Tavern in London 400 years ago? It was an inspiration to him, and he mentions it in his plays no fewer than 48 times – I know, because I’ve counted them.”

The English nation’s growing love for sherry or ‘sack’ is most famously reflected in Shakespeare’s creation, Sir John Falstaff, who declares: “If I had a thousand sons, the first humane principle I would teach them should be, to forswear thin potations and to addict themselves to sack.”

The Irish were some of the first to realize the business opportunities in forswearing “thin potations”, perhaps because Ireland and Spain at one time shared not only their Catholic faith, but a common enemy – England. Today the names above many of the sherry bodegas tell the story of the influx of Irish driven overseas by famine and oppression – O’Neale, Garvey, Terry and even the famous Domecq which was originally founded by an Irishman, Patrick Murphy. The O’Neale bodega would later produce its own sherry named The Wild Geese in memory of these origins.

In 1754 Scotsman Arthur Gordon also fled the religious wars of the time and concentrating his efforts on the wine business did very well for himself. The home he built in Jerez still exists as does his Scottish estate at Wardhouse which has been passed down through generations of Scottish-Spanish heirs, including one Pedro Carlos, known as the “mad laird” who is said to have built a bullring there. History does not relate how the scots took the bullfighting, but the link between sherry and Scotland remains: the finest Scotch whisky is aged in old sherry barrels.

The English also came to Jerez. They founded Williams & Humbert, and the famous Sandeman house, which also tapped into the market for port fro neighbouring Portugal. The London-based agent, Robert Byass, joined with Manuel González Byass, which partnership created perhaps the world’s best-known sherry, Tio Pepe. This partnership lasted for 133 years, and today González is one of the sole remaining family-owned bodegas.

In Victorian times England and in particular London was increasingly the centre of trade from Jerez. And with British authority expanding across the globe, the demand for sherry was also on the rise. It reached its peak at the height of the Victorian era when no sideboard was complete without a decanter of the amber liquid – in those days mostly the sweeter variety. British influence was such that Madrid society started drinking sherry because it was fashionable in London and sherry achieved ‘fashionable chic’ in its own country.

Over the years, a love of the drink has drawn many English-speaking writers to visit the hoe of sherry, among the Lord Byron, who found the local beauties’ “dark languishing eyes… irresistible”, Anthony Trollope, Somerset Maugham, Aldous Huxley and even Ted Hughes. Literature ranging from Graham Greene to Harry Potter is littered with references to the fortified wine which numbered the Beatles amongst its fans.
