JULY 2009
Terral Malaga Festival, edition 2009 will take place at the Cervantes Theatre in Malaga. The program has been completed and during the whole month of July the organization will try to confirm their status of utmost festival of quality music in Andalusia.
This year the festival also comes back to the Cervantes Theatre in Malaga instead of the beach like some of the earlier editions. Maybe a pity and there are pros and contras for all options, but with the incredible program Terral Malaga 2009 will bring quality and variety.
Between the 5th and the 29th of July 2009 there’s also a Terral Street Festival. With a complete and international program, the streets of Malaga will be filled with acrobats, clown, musician of all kind, to bring you a mix of dance, street theatre, music and circus. The songs of Tony Zenet could have been written in the 1920’s, as well as in the 1940’s or 60’s, but always they will have that contemporary touch. His mission is undoubtedly to create nocturnal yet sunny songs, emotionally brought to life with Zenet’s impressive voice.

CESÁRIA ÉVORA
Cesária Évora was born in Mindelo, São Vicente, Cape Verde, in 1941. Rogamar is the title of her new album. Infused with a message of strength, courage and bravery, the tenth album by “the barefoot diva” –she usually performs barefoot as a symbolic salute to the humble neighbourhood where she was born, which she evokes in her songs–invites us to placidly immerse ourselves in Portuguese Africa.
To do so she once again relies on the talent of composers such as Manuel de Novas and Teófilo Chantre, renowned for their saudade rhythms – referred to by many as the Portuguese blues–, and for the morna, a genre of which Cesária is its leading voice, in which she invariably sings to love and distance. The record also includes collaborations with younger artists from the Mindelo region, such as Constantino Cardoso and Jon Luz, creators of native rhythms.
Fresh, melancholy and oceanic, Rogamar –from rogar, to pray, and mar, the sea, ever present – she includes a more festive register, celebrating with the batucada of the island of São Vicente, the rhythm of the drums on Saint John’s day or those accompanying a thoroughly pagan carnival.
Cesária Évora, winner of a Grammy Award in 2004 to the best World Music Album, awarded France’s Legion d’Honneur (2009), and with more than five million records sold worldwide since 1988, is an unresolved puzzle, which increases manyfold the mystery and charm of her songs.
In addition to singing the songs of Rogamar, she will also introduce other pieces from her latest offering, Radio Mindelo, a compilation of songs from her entire musical career.

JERRY LEE LEWIS
The character of Jerry Lee Lewis, “The killer”, (Ferriday, Louisiana, 1935) fits in perfectly with what one would expect from a rock'n'roll star: fun-loving, a womaniser, nonconformist, arrogant, and a show-off. He not only fits the stereotype, but he gives it a new dimension in each of his stage performances and savage piano-playing. He symbolises everything that the rock’n’roll explosion brought in the fifties, the musical basis for most of the music trends that would come later – for they say Jerry was rocking way before rock was invented.
It is not easy to summarise such a long and turbulent biography, except for providing a sketch of one of the greatest legends of modern music. Everything started very early – his precocious and natural talent for music was as evident as his rebellious streak. At ten, he already played the piano perfectly. Inspired by gospel in his first years, he would soon take elements from blues, country, jazz, rockabilly and R&B to shape his own original and unmistakable style. He recorded a couple of singles in Louisiana and went to Memphis to follow the steps of Elvis Presley.
His vigorous acts, were he sang energetically and viciously pounded the piano before a wild audience, earned him the nickname of "The killer". His third single, "Great balls of fire", was his greatest success worldwide, and the film Jamboree firmly established him as a teenage idol. From the eighties onwards, his career started to be valued for its real worth. In 1986 he was the first artist to be included in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Cleveland, Ohio) and in 2003 the magazine Rolling Stone declared him the twenty-fourth best musician of the century.
Having survived the tragedies and excesses of his personal life, “The Killer" continues his musical career, playing and recording, accompanied by his unbribable rock muses.

MOTOWN GALA – 5OTH ANNIVERSARY
“THE FUNK BROTHERS BAND con TITO JACKSON”
Pop’s most important independent record label, Motown (part of Universal Music Group since 1988), is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It all started in Detroit on January 12, 1959, when Berry Gordy Jr. founded Tamla Records, which he soon renamed as Motown, an abbreviation of 'Motor-Town', in a clear homage to his city’s powerful motor industry. What Gordy never imagined is that his record label would be much more than that – it would become a real revolution that transcended music. Its catchy tunes filled the top spots on the playlists and everyone, black and white, danced to their rhythm on the dance floors.
Motown became the sound of the fight for civil rights and against racial segregation. It was also its own style, an exquisite mix of soul, pop and funk with all the spiritual energy of black music. Names such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Jackson Five, Four Tops, The Supremes, The Temptations and Lionel Ritchie are just a few from a long list of artists with which this American label has graced the history of music.

OMAR FARUK & ARTO TUNÇBOYACIYAN
Middle East, Africa and Europe converge around the Mediterranean, " the middle of the earth", and in that framework, Turkey – the birthplace of Omar Faruk Tekbilek–, and Armenia – that of Arto Tunçboyaciyan– represent an important geographic and cultural crossroads. After years of wars and genocide between these neighbouring peoples, the reunion of these two musicians, who have been friends since childhood, allows to break barriers. Now resident in the US for some years, they both fuse East and West in their music, proving that it is possible to put artistic expression and emotion before difference.
“Sin Fronteras” (No Frontiers) is much more than a tour; it is a thrilling musical event. Accompanied by a group of internationally renowned musicians, Omar Faruk and Arto Tunçboyaciyan make every concert a feast of sensitivity, virtuosism and irresistible rhythms.
Omar Faruk (Adana, Turkey, 1951), composer and virtuoso flute-player, is known worldwide for his Sufi-inspired ney music, as well as for his fascinating fusion of traditional middle Eastern music, essentially Turkish, with modern synthesizers. His music not only transcends political frontiers but he also cultivates and develops traditional Middle Eastern sensitivities as few artists can.
Arto Tunçboyaciyan (Galataria, Turkey, 1957), a lauded and respected composer, percussionist and singer descendant of Armenians, has enjoyed an excellent musical career. Since 1998 he works with The Armenian Navy Band, a small orchestra with roots in traditional Armenian and Anatolian music combined with today’s inspiration and sounds, as well as other projects such as this one.

WARSAW VILLAGE BAND
Despite Poland being a rather unknown neighbour for most Western Europeans, the Polish folk scene is in vogue and the Warsaw Village Band (WVB) is one of its best-known groups. Their success is founded on their great love for their Polish musical heritage and their will to preserve it; on their wish to bring back the spirit of old songs to here and now. Discovered internationally in 2003, Kapela ze Wsi Warzszawa (the group’s original name) has since then been critically acclaimed, participating in many musical events, touring worldwide and receiving prizes such as the BBC World Music Award for Best Newcomer 2004.
The Warsaw Village Band has successfully built a solid and very attractive bridge between the more traditional rhythms and the new Polish sounds, combining multiple genres related to techno or trance. They show the dimensions popular music can acquire with knowledge and sensibility.
With their five records –Kapela ze wsi Warszawa (98), Wiosna Ludu (01), Wykozrenienie (05), with which they established themselves worldwide, Upmixing (07), with versions by different DJs, and Infinity (08) – the WVD has developed a completely unique, identifiable sound, presenting themselves as a rebellion against the loss of cultural identity in Poland after the fall of communism, and as a musical alternative to other more commercial works. And above everything, they keep true to a maxim: Remember the past and keep it alive in the future.

DANIEL CASARES CUARTETO
The musical career of Daniel Casares (Malaga, 1980) started precociously. When he was just thirteen, he participated in the recording of the collective album A la guitarra, Estepona and soon came the prizes: Jaén’s Jóvenes Intérpretes Award 1996, the Bordón Minero award at the 37st Festival de Cante de las Minas de la Unión in 1997, first prize of the XII Certamen de Guitarra at the town of L'Hospitalet and Best Artist of 2000 by Thomson Music and Best Musical Newcomer of 2004 awarded by the Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos (ACE) of New York, which awards Hispanic artists. He was also the only European performer chosen to participate in Shanghai’s World Music Festival for the promotion of the World Expo being held at the Chinese city in 2010. Seasoned by all kinds of experiences, one undoubted highlight of his career has been accompanying Flamenco singer Juanito Valderrama in his last years.
Clearly influenced by Paco de Lucía, Manolo Sanlúcar and Vicente Amigo, Daniel Casares’ technique and musical style are sophisticated and very special. He mixes traditional flamenco, grooving and Latin jazz, and brings together influences of Arab, Mediterranean and Atlantic cultures. Fluid, exuberant, powerful, clear and exquisite, meeting all the requisites for virtuosism, Daniel would be at ease with anyone on any stage.
His work includes Duende flamenco (99), La madrugá (01), Corazón de tu alma (04) and Caballero (07), the record he is touring with, dedicated to his father. In all of them, he consolidates his colourful, energetic style and his enthusiasm for composition. As a concert performer, he has already toured Europe, Japan and the United States.

OMARA PORTUONDO
“After so many years of a career spent singing to please people around her, I asked her: “Omara, what would you like to sing?””. Producer Alê Siquiera posed her this very natural question, which would lead to the production of Gracias (08), a record in which Omara Portuondo (Havana, Cuba, 1930) celebrates her 60 years in the music business, and in which she gives herself (and us) a very special gift: a selection of the songs that have marked her career –“Drume negrita”, “Rabo de nube”, “Nuestro gran amor”, “Cachita”, “Ámame como soy”, and the occasional piece composed especially for the occasion, such as the Jorge Drexler song from which gives the record its title.
The dame of Cuban music has spent 60 of her 78 years dedicated to music. A dancer at the Tropicana aged 17, she became one of her country’s voices, singing in bands such as Loquibambla Swing –where she was nicknamed ‘la Novia del Filin’ (The Bride of Feeling)–, Las d'Aida and Orquesta Aragón. However, it was not until the Buena Vista Social Club project –the Ry Cooder record and the Wim Wenders film– that the international public at large was made aware of the richness of Cuban music and the island’s veteran musicians, such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Elíades Ochoa and Omara herself, who now looks back to say Gracias to all – to all those musicians who accompanied her, to the public,… “to whom it may correspond”. But Omara doesn’t say goodbye, she wouldn’t think of it.

BURT BACHARACH
Legendary American composer Burt Bacharach, now 81, has enjoyed a long musical career crowned with some of the best-known love stories of the history of pop music, and he still continues to compose and perform. The relevance of Bacharach (Kansas City, USA, 1928) in the history of modern music was summarised by a specialised encyclopaedia as follows: “simply one of the most talented composers of the 20th century. He was a dominating figure in popular music in the sixties and seventies, writing a staggering 52 hits that reached the top 40. His songs were different from the rest at the time for their musical and emotional sophistication, their complex melodies, non-conventional tempos and surprising chord changes”. The winner of three Oscars and six Grammy awards, Bacharach reached number one in the sales lists for the first time in 1957 with what was also his first collaboration with lyricist Hal David, responsible in equal measures for the extent his musical legacy. “The story of my life” marked the start to dozens of melodies exploited ad infinitum in piped music, films, advertising... Direct, heartfelt songs that are still considered as masterworks of pop, now and forever.
“Walk on by”, “Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head”, “Magic moments”, “What the world needs now”, “I say a little prayer”, “The look of love” and “Alfie” are good examples of the Bacharach seal. Urban melodies, sumptuous orchestrations, glamour, an exquisite and balanced blend of jazz, Brazilian music, rock, soul and unique genius.

DIVINAS
Sing! Sing! Sing! is a theatrical concert and tour of the rhythmic landscapes of the forties and fifties. A fresh combination of Dixieland and jazz that brings together music, choreography, humour, seduction and sophistication. Divinas recreate the great divas and bring us the glamour and savoir faire of those years with a very retro mis-en-scène and a repertoire including swing, jungle, boogie-woogie, Latin rock, tap dancing and ballads. Versions of great songs with brilliant instrumental arrangements and an up-to-date look. Songs like “The preacher”, “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, “I wanna be like you” from The Jungle Book, “Shoo shoo, Baby”, “Don’t bring Lulu” and “It don’t mean a thing” are performed by Divinas and D’Band, a Dixieland combo made up of seven excellent international musicians, who give it their all.
Taking the title of a song by renowned singer, director and composer Louis Prima, Sing! Sing! Sing! (1936) is a celebration of passion, swing –understood not only as a dance, but also as a spirit–, candidness, sensuality and the energy of the music from the interwar period, when, amidst economic and political instability, music filled many lives and perhaps more than ever was the best means to escape from reality and dream.
Sing! Sing! Sing! is a great performance, a party celebrating the best American swing. Pure rhythm and fun.
Divinas is a young artistic company founded in 2004. Its three members come from different artistic disciplines and have participated in other projects such as a cappella music, musical theatre, children’s workshops and shows, contemporary dance, and tap dancing shows and jam sessions. They divide their time between their show tours and teaching music and dance workshops and activities for children and adults.

LOS CHICOS DEL CORO
In 1986 Nicolas Porte founded the Official Choir of the Notre-Dame Basilic in Fourvière, Lyon – France. From that day he has been the artistic director. The choir is composed by boys and girls between 10 and 15 years, all from the same Saint-Marc College in Lyon. They bring a mix of Gregorian and Profane music, but also a variety of popular, contemporary and folk.
After the world wide success of their movie in 2004, this band is bigger than ever. The soundtrack sold over 2 million of copies, the DVD more then 300,000 and did more than 1,000 shows all over the world. They released 9 albums.

AYNUR
Aynur Dogan was born in Cemisgezek in Turkey in 1975. In 1992 she moved to Istanbul where she would start her professional career. Music always had been playing an important role in her life bringing a great fusion between contemporary music and the sounds of the repressed traditions. She’s a troubadour of her countries and her people’s traditional music.
In her songs Aynur brings back the traditional music of Turkey she grew up with describing all parts of daily life in her country like war, terrorism, migration, broken families or women married against their will. The music is a perfect fusion of Arabic melodies with Jewish or even Latin American influences where the baglamas, a Turkish lute, escorted by flutes, violins or electric guitars and synthesizers.
Aynur released 4 albums: Keçe Kurdan (2004), Bahar (2005), Miraz (2005) and Nûpel (2006).

ELEFTHERIA ARVANITAKI
Eleftheria Arvanitaki is one of the most important artists of Greek contemporary music. She just released a new album called “Mírame” (Look at me) inspired by traditional Spanish copla, Quiroga, Quintero , flamenco and Arabic Folk. She also has got the ambition to create a mix between the urban sounds and the old Greek rhythms with the inspiration of the Hellenic poets.
In the eigthies Eleftheria started her musical career with the Opisthodromiki Compania, where she became the best-known voice of rebetika music (‘Rebel’ in Turkish) created by Greek refugees in Asia Minor, a genre that was almost unknown until then. After leaving the group in 1986, she launched her solo career, which established her as the voice of her country’s new feelings and ideals.
Featuring Balkan and Eastern European influences, Menos Ektos, published in 1991, changed her musical importance, establishing her as one of the most important Greek artists. The song “Dinata-Dinata” of the same album made her famous all over Europe.
Over the past years Eleftheria sang at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, but also at the Womad, Montreux Jazz Festival and the Jerusalem International Festivals. She also collaborated with international stars such as Cesária Évora, Dulce Pontes and Philip Glass.

ZENET
Tony Zenet was born in 1967, in Pedregalejo, a small village in the Andalucia province of Malaga. Zenet is a crooner, a musician, an actor and a poet. A complete artist with an incredible voice mixing Argentinean Tango with Andalusia copla, New York Jazz with Cuban Son. This natural fusion creates new intimate club melodies and could remind us of people like Frank Sinatra or Miguel Molina. You can also hear some influences of Chet Baker, Billie Holliday, Chavela Vargas or Edith Piaf.

The Warsaw Village Band has successfully built a solid and very attractive bridge between the more traditional rhythms and the new Polish sounds, combining multiple genres related to techno or trance. They show the dimensions popular music can acquire with knowledge and sensibility.
With their five records –Kapela ze wsi Warszawa (98), Wiosna Ludu (01), Wykozrenienie (05), with which they established themselves worldwide, Upmixing (07), with versions by different DJs, and Infinity (08) – the WVD has developed a completely unique, identifiable sound, presenting themselves as a rebellion against the loss of cultural identity in Poland after the fall of communism, and as a musical alternative to other more commercial works. And above everything, they keep true to a maxim: Remember the past and keep it alive in the future.

DANIEL CASARES CUARTETO
The musical career of Daniel Casares (Malaga, 1980) started precociously. When he was just thirteen, he participated in the recording of the collective album A la guitarra, Estepona and soon came the prizes: Jaén’s Jóvenes Intérpretes Award 1996, the Bordón Minero award at the 37st Festival de Cante de las Minas de la Unión in 1997, first prize of the XII Certamen de Guitarra at the town of L'Hospitalet and Best Artist of 2000 by Thomson Music and Best Musical Newcomer of 2004 awarded by the Asociación de Cronistas de Espectáculos (ACE) of New York, which awards Hispanic artists. He was also the only European performer chosen to participate in Shanghai’s World Music Festival for the promotion of the World Expo being held at the Chinese city in 2010. Seasoned by all kinds of experiences, one undoubted highlight of his career has been accompanying Flamenco singer Juanito Valderrama in his last years.
Clearly influenced by Paco de Lucía, Manolo Sanlúcar and Vicente Amigo, Daniel Casares’ technique and musical style are sophisticated and very special. He mixes traditional flamenco, grooving and Latin jazz, and brings together influences of Arab, Mediterranean and Atlantic cultures. Fluid, exuberant, powerful, clear and exquisite, meeting all the requisites for virtuosism, Daniel would be at ease with anyone on any stage.
His work includes Duende flamenco (99), La madrugá (01), Corazón de tu alma (04) and Caballero (07), the record he is touring with, dedicated to his father. In all of them, he consolidates his colourful, energetic style and his enthusiasm for composition. As a concert performer, he has already toured Europe, Japan and the United States.

OMARA PORTUONDO
“After so many years of a career spent singing to please people around her, I asked her: “Omara, what would you like to sing?””. Producer Alê Siquiera posed her this very natural question, which would lead to the production of Gracias (08), a record in which Omara Portuondo (Havana, Cuba, 1930) celebrates her 60 years in the music business, and in which she gives herself (and us) a very special gift: a selection of the songs that have marked her career –“Drume negrita”, “Rabo de nube”, “Nuestro gran amor”, “Cachita”, “Ámame como soy”, and the occasional piece composed especially for the occasion, such as the Jorge Drexler song from which gives the record its title.
The dame of Cuban music has spent 60 of her 78 years dedicated to music. A dancer at the Tropicana aged 17, she became one of her country’s voices, singing in bands such as Loquibambla Swing –where she was nicknamed ‘la Novia del Filin’ (The Bride of Feeling)–, Las d'Aida and Orquesta Aragón. However, it was not until the Buena Vista Social Club project –the Ry Cooder record and the Wim Wenders film– that the international public at large was made aware of the richness of Cuban music and the island’s veteran musicians, such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Elíades Ochoa and Omara herself, who now looks back to say Gracias to all – to all those musicians who accompanied her, to the public,… “to whom it may correspond”. But Omara doesn’t say goodbye, she wouldn’t think of it.

BURT BACHARACH
Legendary American composer Burt Bacharach, now 81, has enjoyed a long musical career crowned with some of the best-known love stories of the history of pop music, and he still continues to compose and perform. The relevance of Bacharach (Kansas City, USA, 1928) in the history of modern music was summarised by a specialised encyclopaedia as follows: “simply one of the most talented composers of the 20th century. He was a dominating figure in popular music in the sixties and seventies, writing a staggering 52 hits that reached the top 40. His songs were different from the rest at the time for their musical and emotional sophistication, their complex melodies, non-conventional tempos and surprising chord changes”. The winner of three Oscars and six Grammy awards, Bacharach reached number one in the sales lists for the first time in 1957 with what was also his first collaboration with lyricist Hal David, responsible in equal measures for the extent his musical legacy. “The story of my life” marked the start to dozens of melodies exploited ad infinitum in piped music, films, advertising... Direct, heartfelt songs that are still considered as masterworks of pop, now and forever.
“Walk on by”, “Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head”, “Magic moments”, “What the world needs now”, “I say a little prayer”, “The look of love” and “Alfie” are good examples of the Bacharach seal. Urban melodies, sumptuous orchestrations, glamour, an exquisite and balanced blend of jazz, Brazilian music, rock, soul and unique genius.

DIVINAS
Sing! Sing! Sing! is a theatrical concert and tour of the rhythmic landscapes of the forties and fifties. A fresh combination of Dixieland and jazz that brings together music, choreography, humour, seduction and sophistication. Divinas recreate the great divas and bring us the glamour and savoir faire of those years with a very retro mis-en-scène and a repertoire including swing, jungle, boogie-woogie, Latin rock, tap dancing and ballads. Versions of great songs with brilliant instrumental arrangements and an up-to-date look. Songs like “The preacher”, “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, “I wanna be like you” from The Jungle Book, “Shoo shoo, Baby”, “Don’t bring Lulu” and “It don’t mean a thing” are performed by Divinas and D’Band, a Dixieland combo made up of seven excellent international musicians, who give it their all.
Taking the title of a song by renowned singer, director and composer Louis Prima, Sing! Sing! Sing! (1936) is a celebration of passion, swing –understood not only as a dance, but also as a spirit–, candidness, sensuality and the energy of the music from the interwar period, when, amidst economic and political instability, music filled many lives and perhaps more than ever was the best means to escape from reality and dream.
Sing! Sing! Sing! is a great performance, a party celebrating the best American swing. Pure rhythm and fun.
Divinas is a young artistic company founded in 2004. Its three members come from different artistic disciplines and have participated in other projects such as a cappella music, musical theatre, children’s workshops and shows, contemporary dance, and tap dancing shows and jam sessions. They divide their time between their show tours and teaching music and dance workshops and activities for children and adults.
