On the 5th, the 12th and the 26th of May 2009, Teatro Central in Seville will present you there annual flamenco festival called VIENE DEL SUR - Flamenco.

This modern theatre situated on the right bank of the Guadalquivir River was created by the Cultural Department from the Andalusia Government (Consejería de Cultura, Junta de Andalucia) after the World Expo of Seville, back in 1992.
Since the beginning Teatro Central has been trying to bring contemporary Music, Dance or Theatre with a huge variety and respect for the most typical in Andalusia: Flamenco. That’s how the festival started.

5th of May 2009 – CHIQUETETE and LA SUSI
"DESDE TRIANA" (‘From Triana’)
Biography CHIQUETETE
Born as Antonio Cortés "Chiquetete" in Algeciras (Andalucia, South Spain) in 1948, but grew up in Triana, old Gypsy neighbourhood ‘barrio’ on the right bank of the Guadalquivir River, in the centre of the city of Seville. Since he was young you could tell he was going to be a flamenco star. All day he was hanging around with other flamenco stars who later would become famous, like Manuel Molina or Manolo Dominguez “El Rubio” (‘Blond’). With them he started to perform on stage under the name: “Los Algecireños” (‘Those from Algeciras’) and later on as “Los Gitanillos del Tardón” (‘The Tardón Gypsies’).
Manolo Caracol 
Till the late sixties Chiquetete would conduct famous flamenco dancers like Matilde Coral, Farruco, Pepa Coral or Curro Vélez. He also performed on stage with big flamenco stars by that time like Lola Flores, Chocolate, Manolo Caracol or Marifé de Triana. In 1975 he gained the first recognition for his flamenco art winning the Premio del Festival de Cante Antonio Mairena, de Mairena del Alcor (village in the province of Seville) – the Antonio Mairena Award.
Some more years he keeps on triumphing as flamenco singer but in the beginning of the eighties he also starts singing romantic ballads with flamenco influence. Those were the days he created albums like “Tú y Yo” (‘You and I’) (1981), “Sevilla sin tu amor” (‘Without your love Seville’) (1988) and “Canalla” (‘Scum’) (1989). After some years of silence he released “Como La Marea” (‘Like the Flood’) in 2004, produced by his son Fran Cortés.
Biography LA SUSI
Susana Amador aka La Susi was born in Alicante in 1955 and is member of one of the most prestigious flamenco families in Spain. She was only 14 when she travelled to Madrid to perform flamenco dancing on stage of the famous flamenco club Cuevas de Nemesio in Madrid.
For years she will keep on performing flamenco dance, with big names and companies like Villa Rosa and Torres Bermejas, Las Brujas or Los Canasteros, till she would start singing flamenco.
The famous Paco de Lucia produced her first album “La Primavera” in 1977 with big flamenco hits like “Tangos de Ole y Ole”, “Agua de Mayo” and “Cultura Jonda 22”. Her real cool gypsy voice mixed with the latest studio technology makes her an original and typical flamenco star with the capacity to sing the most up-tempo flamenco rhythms , like Bulería, as well as solemn songs.

“Chanta la Mui” (‘Sing the Mui’)
Biography DANIEL DOÑA

Daniel Doña was born in Granada in 1977. His Flamenco dancing is an original mix between the New Flamenco music and Contemporary Dance. He obtained a Master Degree at the Superior Academy of Contemporary Dance in Madrid. Doña has been performing productions of famous companies like Antonio Marquéz, Rafaela Carrasco and Rafael Amargo, where he performed ‘solo’, but also at the National Ballet of Spain (Ballet Nacional de España) and the New Spanish Ballet (Nuevo Ballet Español).
His most important performances as a singer are “Los cuatro elementos” from 2004, with the collaboration of Carmen Cortés, Rocio Molina, Alejandro Granados and Carlos Rodríguez, and “Romancero Gitano” from Paco Suárez in 2005.
Daniel Doña is also a member of the ESS3 Movimiento Company whose productions like, “Cámara Negra” (2006), “Chanta la Mui” (2006) and “Chanta la Mui II” (2008) have been viewed on national and international stages.
At the 2002 edition of Choreography of Spanish Dance in Madrid Doña was awarded for his high quality performances.
Biography OLGA PERICET

Born in Cordoba in 1975 and Master Degree at the Superior School of Dance and Drama of her native town. She completed her studies with Matilde Coral, Manolo Marín, Milagros Mengíbar and Cristóbal Reyes in Seville.
Her professional career takes off in the better flamenco clubs (‘Tablaos” or “Peñas”) from Madrid and Japan and she completed her skills with the Rafael Amargo Company, which she joined in 1998. She also collaborates with Rafaela Carrasco’s “A tres bandas”.
As choreographer Olga Pericet ‘s first production was called “Bolero, Cartas de amor y desamor”, in which she also appeared as ‘primary ballerina’. At the same time she keeps touring around the world with the New Spanish Ballet (Nuevo Ballet Español).
At the XIII Certamen Coreográfico de Danza Española (Choreography Contest Spanish Dance) they awarded her with the highest price for choreography and music. Together with some other colleagues, like Daniel Doña, she creates the ESS3 Movimiento Company, producing “Chanta la Mui”, previewed in Madrid in 2006.
Biography Marco Flores

Born in Arcos de la Frontera (Andalusia, South Spain) in 1981 where he would start his career on a autodidact way. After some time he moved to Seville to work with Javier Latorre, Antonio Canales and Javier Barón as his big masters.
In 2001, when his career really starts going upwards, he was contracted with the Sara Baras Company, to do “Juana La Loca” (Juana I de Castilla, first Queen of Spain), and later on he worked together with Rafael Amargo to do “Amargo” and “Poeta en Nueva York” and collaborated with Rafaela Carrasco in “Una Mirada del Flamenco”.
In 2003 he creates the ESS3 Movimiento Company together with Daniel Doña, Olga Pericet and Manuel Liñán, with who he also created the “2 en Compañía” Show. Together with his colleagues from the ESS3 he creates “Chanta la Mui”, previewed in the Pradillo de Madrid Theatre. With this same production the were also invited at the 20th Anniversary of the Actors Union Gala (Gala del 20 Aniversario de la Union de Actores), where they performed with Enrique Morente.

For his career he was awarded with the Antonio Gades Award, the Mario Maya Award, the Carmen Amaya Award and the Premio de Baile del Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco in Cordoba in 2007.

“COMPADRES” (‘Comrades’)
Biography Manolo Franco

Trained at the Academy of Matilde Coral as rhythm guitarist, Manolo Franco, born in Seville in 1960, played with a lot of famous people from flamenco world: from Antonio Mairena till Carmen Linares, no forgetting to mention José de la Tomasa, José Mercé, Manuel Mairena or Calixto Sánchez, who reformed him to first guitar in the performances they did together.

His original style of playing has been awarded with the Premio de Guitarra de Concierto de Radio Sevilla (the Radio Seville Live Guitar playing Award) back in 1979; and the Giraldillo del Toque Award in 1984. The jury of this last award stressed Manolo Franco’s art of playing as second guitar in Flamenco Dance and Singing and as well as solo guitarist on stage.
The same Paco de Lucia once said that Manolo Franco is “full of imagination, fresh and new ideas”.
Biography Niño de Pura

Born as Daniel Navarro Cruz, “Niño de Pura” in Sevilla in 1966. Together with his brother, José Joaquín he starts playing second guitar for Flamenco Dance.
With the help of Manolo Sanlúcar, Manuel Lozano and Manolo Carmona he achieves to improve his play and became one of the most respected guitarists in Flamenco World. He won the Cátedra de Flamencología of Jerez Award and the Bordón Minero Award at the Las Minas de la Union Festival.

In 1986 he released his first album called “Capricho de Bohemia”. Later “Caliente” (1991), “Maquida” (1996) and “Pozo y Caudal” (2002) follow. In this last album La Macanita and Carles Benavent offer their collaboration which made the album successful.
As producer he will work together with Aurora Vargas and Pensequito. Niño de Pura also composed the music for “Mas allá de la luz”, work for solo guitar and chamber orchestra performed for the first time at the Reales Alcázares in Seville.
