- AKRON FAMILY
BIOGRAPHY AKRON FAMILY
Akron/Family is one of the most respected North American bands of the moment in the world of new folk, together with Devendra Banhart or CocoRosie. Their psychedelic and unusual structures don’t make inappropriate the categories of weird folk or freak folk. This quartet of boys from the rural America, who moved to NYC in 2002 to make music, has surprised both friends and strangers with an interesting and mysterious discography, edited partly by Young God Records, the label of Michael Gira (Swans). In Territorios Sevilla, the now trio will launch its fifth album, “Set ‘Em Wild, Set ’Em Free”, to be released soon.- WILCO
BIOGRAPHY WILCO
Initiated in alternative country-rock, Wilco embraces folk-rock, avant-garde, power pop, psychedelia or experimentation. Their creative process is, apart from stunning, one of the most radical, daring and achieved in the entire American rock scene. After the break-up of Uncle Tupelo, the singer, guitarist and songwriter would form Wilco in Chicago, in 1994, with the bassist John Stirrat, the drummer Ken Coomer and the multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston. Jay Bennett would join the quartet to record their début LP, “A.M.” (95), perpetuating the features of Uncle Tupelo; that is, blues-rock and country-rock themes similar to Byrds, Dylan, Stones or Neil Young style. After it, they would surprise in “Being There” (96), with an obvious fondness for the experimentation and traces of rock, country, psychedelia, folk and pop; “Summerteeth” (99), one of their best albums, full of dazzling power-pop melodies; “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” (02), quite experimental again with melodies shrouded in daring arrangements, atmospheric sounds and a more and more personal perspective; “A Ghost is Born” (04), a reflection of the search for the perfect sound though keeping the songs as the absolute priority; and, finally, “Sky Blue Sky” (07), where the band retrieves their more melodic and calm sounds in some simple but beautiful compositions. Their last work sounds as a kaleidoscope where the shades and possibilities are endless. The waters of all their previous works and the eagerness to register with dignity the sound of better times converge here. Nowadays Wilco are recording their new album, whose release is scheduled for this year’s spring.
- CYCLE
BIOGRAPHY CYCLE
The Madrid-based Cycle, who already visited Territorios Sevilla in 2005, reinforce their comeback with “Sleepwalkers”, a second delivery and a stunning album of night atonement. They are back with an intimidating, categorical album and also some personal, musical and editorial changes, after an absence of almost two years invested in parallel projects. On the one hand, Krakovia, the most talked of, with David Kano among a mixed troop of rockabillish techno-punks who visited us last year on Territorios Digitales. On the other hand, Carlos Calderón, between the production and his electrodub project, Parker & Bukowski. And La China, alternating the hosting of the TV show Ipop (TVE 2) with several cameos and a solo début (“De Amor y Muerte”, 2007). But, while this is happening and the city sleeps, the unwearying Dr. Kane has been shut away in his studio, Rec Division, devising alone the new strategy: an album that started as “Everything is Broken” and finishes as “Sleepwalkers”, perfect allegory for the night-wanderer and the insomniac and vehement spirit of the album. With a work that not only comes out successful from the challenge with its impressive predecessor but exhaling a thick feeling of nocturnality and premeditation through a seductive exercise of tension, drama, sex and digital and human self-control.
- DaTA
BIOGRAPHY DaTA
When you’re holding the third EP by datA, you’re shaking with expectation. "Rapture" is an explosive encounter between two huge talents of the electro and rock scene: the Frenchie datA, at 22 years old one of the rising stars of the new pop/synthesizer generation (David prefers the term disco himself), and Sébastien Grainger, one-time singer of the now disbanded Death From Above 1979. The many remixes datA has done over the past two years including Felix da Housecat, Benjamin Diamond, Danger, Chroméo, Terry Poison, the more rocky Nelsons or the poppy, airy "Kim & Jessie" by M83 are also a good example of how the Parisian has been able to move from a purely electro imaginative universe to a melodious world more in tune with his roots and his influences.- DJ MEHDI + SURKIN
BIOGRAPHY DJ MEHDI + SURKIN
He was born in the Paris suburbs in 1977, of a French and Tunisian background. His father and two of his uncles were also DJs. He is an original Ed Banger Records artist and all about hip-hop and dance music. His last album was "Lucky Boy", released in 2006. After other EP releases, his next record will actually be a compilation of remixes, about to drop in april. He spent 2008 touring the world with his label-mates Justice and Busy P as well as remixing Santogold and Ghostface Killah and composing songs for Spank Rock and Mapei. 2007 was equally about touring, most notably with partner A-Trak for the inaugural Fool's Gold tour in Europe and North-America, plus solo tours in Australia, Japan and Brazil. He is one of the most prolific french hip-hop producer ever, having worked with its biggest stars since 1996, from Booba to Diam's, from IAM to MC Solaar. Until 2002, he was the main composer for his bands Ideal J and 113, selling several hundred thousands records and winning all major french music awards.
20 year-old Surkin comes from Southern France and lives in Paris. He dropped out of art school two years ago and never looked back. A former four-to-the-floor hater (rap was all he cared for until 2003), Surkin got into dance music through Detroit ghettotech and -thanks God for P2P- started to dig deeper into club music history, focusing on Miami Bass, Chicago ghetto-(and non) house music. Add a thick layer of glammed-up filtered house courtesy of French dons Daft Punk and local originators Jess & Crabbe and you’ve got the full Surkin mille-feuilles. In May 2006, Parisian label Institubes released not one but two Surkin records at once: "Ghetto Obsession EP" and "Radio Fireworks". The response was tremendous. Played and playlisted by everybody, from the Ed Banger/Erol Alkan cabal to Boys Noize and Tiga. Surkin went on to play all over the place, from small clubs and warehouses to huge festivals, and toured Australia, North America, England and Japan several times. His fast-paced, cut-up mixing of old and new electro and house bangers has become a style, a template. Remix offers came in droves, from Boys Noize, DJ Mehdi, Justine Electra, Klaxons, Paul Johnson, Para One, Chromeo, Foals, VHS or Beta, Justice... Surkin’s third EP, "Next of Kin", featured a huge fuck-the-zeitgeist hit, "White Knight Two", that just made Mixmag’s top 100 tracks list of 2008. His first album is expected this October.- THE RIGHT ONS
BIOGRAPHY THE RIGHT ONS
Three years ago, four old friends, four twins of different sizes, gathered together underground to shape their passions, their common musical vices. Fragrances and body fluids of The Faces, Sly and Family Stone, Marvin Gaye, MC5, Run Dmc, The JBs… came out almost without noticing, when playing together. The four Right Ons had played separately in several bands but together they created a new and different monster. A love machine, a mirror ball made from suede and leather. The music that James Brown’s wife played to their little children, the soundtrack of “Boogie Nights” or the rhythm that the support band for Funk Inc and Booker T would have listened and sweated to. Beside many concerts on their own at clubs, beaches, bikers meetings and village parties, since 2006 they have played as support group for Bellrays, Marah, Diamond Dogs and Mando Diao to the joy of the first rows. They dance with them, want their tambourines and sing songs they listen for the first time. They ask for their T-shirts, want to take pictures, raffle used water bottles. One summer, while attending to the fans, they even had the time to record their first album. Though it seems the third one. “80.81” recovers the desire to believe in a band, in these times of one hit wonders and cry-babies with badly ironed trainers. A hedonistic album, of life celebration. Guitars as knifes and basses in Nacho Vidal style. Catchy melodies, broken voices of the bastard sons of Thin Lizzy and Tina Turner. Everything you hear is live recorded, some of them first takes. In Paco Loco’s Odd Studios you could smell the carpets of Muscle Shoals. Complete sessions of the band looking at each other’s faces and getting the best from newborn songs. And oops, they did it again. After travelling this Sagittarius country during 2008 and touring twice along USA, they have finished the best rock album you’ll be listening to this 2009. “Look Inside, Now!” was recorded last November at the Q Division Studios in Boston with the producer Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Ed Valauskas in command. Ten songs that mark each one of them one moment during one night with the band, they take you by your hand and drag you; you don’t want to go home. They are going to steal your girlfriend, to get your wires crossed and you won’t realize where it came from.- DOGO Y LOS MERCENARIOS
BIOGRAPHY DOGO Y LOS MERCENARIOS
Band from Seville formed in 1984 by Juanjo Pizarro, Miguel Ángel Suárez and Diego Fuentes. The sound of the group feeds from all the possible rock 'n roll sources from several decades, getting to channel energy and emotion in vibrating rhythm themes as well as in velvet ballads. Their discography is the following: “Ansia" (Nuevos Medios, 1986), "Llueve en Sevilla" (Nuevos Medios, 1988) and "Mala Reputación" (Nuevos Medios, 1990). After the break-up of the band in 1992, each one of its members has kept on with their musical career in different projects. The performance in the Festival Territorios Sevilla means a new turn for this group. In their concert, they will advance new and burning material from their next discographic work. Nowadays, Dogo y Los Mercenarios is formed by Juan Ramón Borreguero “Rama” (drums), Luis Almagro “Luiso” (bass), Carlos Cepeda “Charlie” (guitar) and Diego Fuentes “Dogo” (lead vocal).- LORI MEYERS
BIOGRAPHY LORI MEYERS
Lori Meyers is a pop-rock band from the location of Loja in Granada. It was formed in the beginnings of 1998 by Antonio López, Julián Méndez, Alejandro Méndez and Alfredo Núñez. Since then, the band has become one of the most promising bets of national indie. With their début album, “Viaje de Estudios” (2004), they introduced a truly declaration of principles: melodies of profound importance, distinct nature and fluency typical of the great ones. Their following work, “Hostal Pimodan” (2005), was a contemporary version of the Parisian hotel which, during the first half of the 19th century, was a shelter for men of letters, painters, musicians and bohemians who promoted the transformation of the society and the culture, opening the modernity. After a break of two years resting and composing, “Cronolánea” appears, an album recorded with the producer Ken Coomer (who has played the drums with Uncle Tupelo and Wilco) and the sound engineer Charlie Brocco, and was chosen by Mondosonoro as 2008 Best National Album.
