ORISHAS

Roldán González, Hiram Riverí “Ruzzo” and Yotuel Romero were born in Havana but met in Paris. Different paths, none of them easy, brought them to Paris from Cuba. Ruzzo and Yotuel were rapping with Amenaza and Roldán was singing traditional Cuban music with the group Rico Son. Some got left behind on the way, but the idea of mixing hip hop with traditional Cuban music drove them forwards. In 1999, Orishas (a Yoruba word for a type of demi-God) released their first album, ‘A lo cubano’. Since then music critics around Europe have been paying homage, with these immigrants who arrived practically illegally becoming the great hope for global rap. They have won respect in the United States and in Latin America, and in their own country they are an institution, attracting a crowd of over 50,000 to their first concert in Havana. Many critics consider their revolutionary fusion of hip hop and Cuban son to be one of the major artistic developments of recent years. Today, having released only three albums, Orishas have become a symbol of 21st century Cuban music, thanks to their powerful, imaginative and deeply-rooted sound. This exciting Cuban trio will be performing at Territorios.

VIOLADORES DEL VERSO

Violadores del Verso are a rap band from Saragossa formed by Hate (Sergio Rodríguez, MC), Kase-O (Javier Ibarra, MC), Lírico (David Gilaberte, MC) and R de Rumba (Rubén Cuevas, DJ and producer). Rap is the weapon used by this group, and rhyme is there ally. The first reference to these 4 MCs calling themselves Violadores del verso is the Gangsta Squad demo. Their first LP as a group, "Genios" was released in 1999 and revolutionised the national scene, making them into one of the leading Spanish rap groups. In 2001 they released two discs, the first a maxi called “Atrás” with three previously unreleased tracks, and "Vicios y Virtudes", which consolidated their position as one of the most important Spanish rap groups. In mid-2002, once again using the name Violadores del Verso, they released the "Tú eres alguien / Bombo Clap” EP. Four years later, in May 2006, they released their latest work, "Vivir para contarlo / Haciendo lo nuestro", a maxi with extracts from their third LP, which was planned for autumn 2006. This disc had two new tracks and a remix of one of them, together with their instrumental versions.

WIM MERTENS DUO

The Belgian composer Wim Mertens was born in 1953 and came to international attention in the 80s for his “new age” music.
Mertens plays piano and classical guitar, and sometimes sings in his distinctive sharp voice, using a highly personal and imaginative vocal style. This artist, conscious of the corrupting effect that language can have, creates the vocal part using non-semantic sounds, which resemble old French or Latin. For Mertens this is a vehicle with which he can go further, an element of pure transcendence which he invites us to share.
Wim Mertens, has performed many concerts as a soloist, in a duo and with his band all over Europe, North and Central America and Japan. In 2008, Wim Mertens (piano, vocals) will perform as a duo with the incredibly energetic violinist Gudrun Vercampt in an unforgettable show in which they will play songs from a range a albums, including “Un respiro” and the most recent, “Receptable” (2007).
More suggestive than ever, Wim Mertens invites us to discover his orchestral awareness, without forgetting his passion for vocals, not just as an instrument, but also as a guide for the piano and instrumentation. After 25 years of performing, Wim Mertens demonstrates that even today, composing can be intimately linked to performance.
